The male pass rate was 45.7% and the female pass rate 42.4%. Month by month, pass rates ranged from 40.6% in April 2025 to 48.5% in October 2025. In 2024/25, Atherton’s pass rate was 44.4% from 7,690 tests.

A lower pass rate doesn’t mean you can’t pass here. Preparation matters far more than the centre: Callum’s learners average a pass rate of over 80%.

On the day

What happens on your driving test.

The practical car test lasts around 40 minutes and follows the same format at every test centre in Great Britain, including Atherton.

  1. 01

    Eyesight check

Before you drive, you’ll read a number plate from 20 metres away. If you can’t, you’ll fail and the test won’t continue.

  2. 02

    ‘Show me, tell me’ questions

You’ll be asked two vehicle safety questions: one before you drive (tell me) and one while you’re driving (show me).

  3. 03

    General driving ability

You’ll drive in a variety of road and traffic conditions for around 40 minutes. You might be asked to pull over and pull away, including a hill start or from behind a parked car.

  4. 04

    Reversing manoeuvre

You’ll be asked to do one of: parallel park at the side of the road, park in a parking bay (driving in or reversing in), or pull up on the right, reverse two car lengths and rejoin traffic.

  5. 05

    Independent driving

For about 20 minutes you’ll drive without turn-by-turn directions, following a sat nav or traffic signs.

  6. 06

    Your result

You’ll pass if you make no more than 15 driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults. The examiner will explain your result and give you feedback.

Tips

How to pass your test at Atherton.

Simple steps that make a big difference, from Callum’s experience helping local learners pass.

Know the local roads

Spend lesson time on the roads around Atherton, Atherleigh Way and Hag Fold so the area feels familiar on the day.

Use your instructor’s car

Taking your test in the dual-controlled car you learned in means no surprises with controls, mirrors or clutch.

Arrive early

Get to Gibfield Park Avenue with time to spare, and a short warm-up drive beforehand can help settle nerves.

Bring your licence

You must bring your UK photocard driving licence. Without it, your test won’t go ahead.

Book when you’re ready

Booking too early is a common reason people fail. Callum only puts pupils forward when they’re genuinely test-ready.

Take your instructor along

You can ask for your instructor to sit in on the test, which many learners find reassuring and helpful for feedback.

★★★★★Passed first time

“I would 100% recommend Callum to anyone who is looking for a driving instructor. He has been amazing from the moment I arranged my lessons to me passing my test first time! He has been so supportive throughout my journey. Nothing is too much trouble for him. Thank you for everything Callum, I couldn’t have done it without you.”
